Emmanuela Shinta, the founder of Ranu Welum Foundation, has officially become a member of Advisory Group for upcoming international meeting Stockholm +50 by invitation from Executive Director of UNEP Inger Andersen, along with other ten people from various stakeholders all over the world.

The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, also known as the Stockholm Conference, was the first UN conference on the environment and was held between 5 and 16 June 1972 in Stockholm. On 2 and 3 June 2022, Stockholm+50 itself will commemorate the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Environment and celebrate 50 years of global environmental action. By recognizing the importance of multilateralism in tackling the Earth’s triple planetary crisis – climate, nature, and pollution – the event aims to act as a springboard accelerate the implementation of the UN Decade of Action to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals, including the 2030 Agenda, Paris Agreement on climate change, the post-2020 global Biodiversity Framework, and encourage the adoption of green post-COVID-19 recovery plans. A one-day preparatory meeting will also be held at United Nations Headquarters in New York on 28 March 2022.

Emmanuela’s involvement will mark the history of Dayak’s representative in the high-level meeting regarding environment. Learn more about Stockholm+50 here.

EMMANUELA SHINTA - Vision Statement for Stockholm +50

IP are the first to be affected by climate change and environmental disaster but they are also the first to respond to environmental battles. Rather than seeing IP as the weakest or vulnerable group, we need to see them as one of the potential key players in COMBATING climate change and RENEW our connection with environment.

There are three points in which I see Stockholm +50 can be a success and have a long-term real impact.

1.     Renewal of the concepts of man and his connection with environment. Learn about this through the perspective of the guardians of the forests/stewards of the earth. No matter how noble, profitable or convincing a standard of development sounds like and even look like, projects that put indigenous people in pain and misery will never be sustainable.

2.     Synchronization between the high-level agendas/global policies and the need on the ground, & conversion from ideas into actions. The change can only happen when the global policies are implemented on the ground level. I believe it can be achieved through these four steps; Simplifying the mechanism; identifyingreal problems and key players/stakeholders on the ground; accelerating support, finance, publications, recognitions etc;implementingby focusing on education, multiplication and

3.     Indigenous Initiative X Modern science/technology for Sustainable Solutions. There are so many success stories on the ground, done with indigenous wisdoms who have been protecting nature for thousands of years. Indigenous youth is the key player to bridge these two and bring it together to be a solution to our current problems. IP have wisdoms as solutions to offer. More collaborative efforts with other stakeholders give hands and supports will lead to more success and impacts.

Shortly, Stockholm +50 is successful when it is able to channel the process of changing victim story consist of tension and violation into a winning story of hope and solutions for all.
