On 10 April 2021, Ranu Welum held a film premiere with the villagers in Talekoi for its newest documentary, entitled Kaharapen, which means ‘whom we put our hope’.
The story goes around the teachers’ struggle for learning-teaching process during pandemic, whilst there is no internet access in remote areas where they work. Herianto, an honorary teacher who have worked for more than 15 years in Talekoi elementary school shared how the Covid-19 made things two times more difficult for teachers. The indigenous communities have been going a hard time because of the pandemic, and education system has not provided a solution for students in remote areas. This is a story about hope and resilience of the communities, where the teachers with support from Ranu Welum Foundation, trying to create an alternative learning tool which is applicable even without internet support.
The premiere was attended by around 100 people; all live in Talekoi village. Besides Kaharapen, there were also two other films shown; Jumpun Lewu Kami and Dayak: Facing The Giants. All films were shot in Talekoi village. The screening was held following the health protocol. The film itself will be available online on May 16th on our YouTube Channel, on the same date of Ranu Welum’s 5th anniversary.
