TANGKILING - What if you get lost in the jungle without a map, what will you do? Of course, you will do your best to survive. Therefore, to introduce peat forests and also basic survival skills in the jungle, we conducted a survival class: surviving in peat forests.
On October 1st, thirteen youth began our adventure by traveling by motorbike from Palangkaraya to our peat forest in Tangkiling. After arriving at the location, we started exploring the forest while learning about the uniqueness of the soil, water, and plant species that grow on peat. Through a total of 6 missions given, participants learned about forest tracking, how to get water in the jungle, first aid, planting trees and making shelter. Creating an emergency shelter to prevent hypothermia is one of our main missions. Not many people know that hypothermia is the main killer if you are in a cold place, such as flooded location or wet peat swamp forest. Making an emergency shelter is indispensable to protect ourselves from the weather and dangerous animals.
Our mission ended with tree planting with the participants, in which each of us planted one native peatland tree. Through this mission we wanted to involve the youth to join forces in the forest restoration effort. We hope that they will be more concerned and more actively involved in efforts to protect the peat ecosystem.
