On November 24, Palangkaraya became a hub of essential learning and community resilience-building as 15 enthusiastic young volunteers gathered for a specialized training session on climate disaster preparedness. This critical initiative was orchestrated by the Ranu Welum Foundation, with support from GIZ GmbH, underscoring their commitment to equipping youth with vital skills for confronting environmental challenges.
Leading the session was Daurie Bintang, a certified therapist, whose extensive expertise provided a robust learning experience for participants. The comprehensive training focused on skills that are indispensable for volunteers working in disaster-prone settings. Key areas of instruction included self-life-saving techniques, which are fundamental for ensuring personal safety in hazardous conditions.
The session also covered psychological first aid, providing participants with the tools to offer immediate and effective support to those impacted by climate-induced disasters. This aspect of the training is crucial, as psychological resilience is as important as physical safety in disaster scenarios.
Emphasizing volunteer well-being, the training addressed relaxation and burnout prevention. These strategies help ensure that volunteers remain mentally and physically fit during prolonged and demanding aid efforts. Physical maintenance techniques, including first help for muscle and joint injuries, prepared volunteers to handle common physical strains they might encounter in the field.
Since 2015, Ranu Welum Foundation itself has mobilized over 3,000 volunteers for climate disaster, especilally for forest fires and flood situations. This training represents a significant step towards fostering a new generation of climate disaster volunteers who are not only prepared to protect others but also equipped to sustain their health and effectiveness in challenging situations. Through such initiatives, the Ranu Welum Foundation and GIZ GmbH are actively investing in resilient youth leadership for a sustainable future.
