“The Heartland Project” is a movement where every person plants at least one tree on their own. It’s a movement where youth initiate and organize reforestation programs and influence others in planting trees. A collective solidarity effort to restore the ecosystem, raise awareness on climate change and take real climate action. Read Pt 1 & Pt 2.

Here’s the story of Heartland Project Pt 3…

The calendar was marked on March 21st 2020 for the 3rd Heartland Project, where we wanted to commemorate International Day of Forests by planting trees. Through our YOUTH ACT campaign, we gathered youth organizations and individuals from all over Indonesia to join in forces for this movement, as we targeted 10,000 trees to be planted this year (We planted 7,500 trees last year!).

Youth from Central Kalimantan, Yogyakarta, Jakarta, NTB, East Java, Bali, South Sumatra, Maluku, West Kalimantan and Mentawai signed up to take climate action together. We have 41 organizations, 734 individuals, and 1922 trees registered!

Although most of the organizations had to cancel their big tree-planting events due to the Covid-19 spread in Indonesia, this didn’t stop us take climate action. We still urge people to plant, 1 person 1 tree, at their own backyard and continue the campaign online to spread the awareness and tell that anyone, even ordinary young people, can become a hero as they refuse to do nothing and become part of the solution.

In Central Kalimantan we received tree seedlings for free from BPDASHL Kahayan. We had volunteer organizers in Palangkaraya city, Sampit, Pangkalan Bun, and East Barito regencies helping the distribution. People can come get seedlings for free to plant and take care on their own. We had seedlings for: Jengkol, Cempedak, Jelutung, Tanjung, Mango, Rambutan, Guava, and Lime - fruit trees!

The big reforestation activities are postponed, not cancelled, we will continue this movement after we get through Covid-19 crisis! We will still conduct the reforestation after everything gets better, you can also adopt a tree to support our campaign by donating here & confirm via email to action@ranuwelum.org

Special thanks to

  • Youth Act Kalimantan volunteers for doing live music performances to promote the campaign and fundraising the postponed event.

  • Donors of “Adopt A Tree” program (Alfiana Raharjo, Ola Abas, E. Trixie, R A Elsza Ayu), thanks to you we will plant another 95 trees in our reforestation site.

  • Individuals & organizations all over Indonesia taking part of this movement.

The reason we keep doing this movement is to show that Indonesian youth are uniting in solidarity to address the climate crisis no matter what! See more pictures here!
